Will I need to install water "pretreatment" equipment with my new "Bubble-Up" aeration system? If your well water contains elevated mineral in the form of Iron(Fe)>0.3 ppm, Manganese(Mn)>0.05 ppm or Hardness excessively above the EPA secondary standard of 75 ppm, you will most likely need to install an appropriately sized water pretreatment system along with the installation of "ANY" waterborne radon system. Some oxidized minerals in your product water could make it appear somewhat like weak tea coming from your faucet. If the level of Iron in your water exceeds the staining level of 0.3 ppm, it is first important to know what type of iron you are trying to remove. If the iron is in a ferric (particulate) form, then a properly sized filter will be needed to "strain" the mineral from the water prior to entering the aeration system eventually causing it to foul and possibly clog the delivery solonoid valves which will allow the system to overfill and flood the surrounding area with water. If the elevated minerals are in a ferrous (soluble) form, a common method of pretreatment is to install an "ION Exchange" unit, more commonly known as a water softener. These systems remove the possitively charged mineral by passing the water through a tank filled with synthetic, negatively charged resin beads. The beads attract the soluble mineral (ie: ferrous iron, manganese, hardness, etc.) from the water leaving the water virtually free of minerals that can become oxidized during the aeration process. There are certain instances where water pretreatment can be more complicated than expected, depending on other variables such as bacteria, pH and organics. The best way to know for sure if water pretreatment is needed prior to a radon aeration system, is to have a qualified, independent lab conduct a standard water test for these contaminants.
